Silk Holiday Gift bag, with a Drawstring Closure

They say you can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear, but what about a silk purse out of a greatly reduced silk drape bought on special.

These pre-packaged drape sets make an economical way of buying fabric if you don’t mind spending time unpicking the seams. This 108 inch x 41 inch drape gives me 3 yards of Dupioni silk, plenty for some cushions or in this case little drawstring bags to fill with gifts. They make a special way of bestowing a loved one or family with little presents.

What you’ll need:

  • Piece of red silk 7 1/2 x 11
  • Lining (I used white cotton) 7 1/2 x 11
  • Minky 4 3/4 inch x 11
  • Coordinating thread

Sew the fabric together: lining, Minky, outer. You may need to swap thread color (think about the color used outside).

Iron the seams flat

Fold the fabric in half, length ways and pin. (I found the minky is a little slippery). Leave about an inch gap in the silk (that’s the bit between the pins). You can see that I used white thread for the lining and red for the silk.

Pull the tube apart and rearrange so that the seam is in the center, re-pin and sew across the bottom of the bag.

Turn the tube the right way then tuck the lining back inside the bag so the Minky is equal distance in and out of the bag.

The bag is too small for my sewing machine so I have to do the next bit by hand. Run two lines of sewing around the bag. This will become the loop where the drawstring goes.

Hand-sew-the-pocket

Pull the lining back out of the bag and hand whip stitch it closed.

Whip-stitch

To make the drawstring; cut a 2×20 strip of silk. Iron the two sides towards the middle, then iron the strip in half. Sew as near to the edge as you dare turning in the ends.  Silk does unravel quite badly so an alternative is to use ribbon

Use a safety pin to pull the drawstring through the loop.

Your bag is done Fill with goodies to give as a present or what about an alternative napkin holder for the holiday table.
